Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

Have You Heard of Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)?

At Therapy Solutions, we are happy to say that we offer Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) at our clinic.

A pulmonologist interprets PFTs and a written report of clearance or restrictions is provided. Assistance with set up and monitoring of an effective program including baseline and annual tests are available.

At Therapy Solutions, we also offer a DOT-FMCSA physical exam, which consists of the necessary tests to complete the medical examination report form (long form) from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

What is a Pulmonary Function Test?

As stated by Johns Hopkins Medicine,

“Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are noninvasive tests that show how well the lungs are working. The tests measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This information can help your healthcare provider diagnose and decide the treatment of certain lung disorders.”

A Pulmonary Function Test can be done in two different ways: spirometry and plethysmography.

Spirometry is done by hooking up a spirometer (small device with a mouthpiece) to an electronic machine. Plethysmography is done by sitting in an air-tight box (similar to a telephone booth). Both tests are done to check the function of the lungs and decide if pulmonary rehabilitation is needed.

A Pulmonary Function Test is used to test several different aspects of the lungs, including, but not limited to:

  • Tidal volume (VT)
  • Minute volume (MV)
  • Vital capacity (VC)
  • Functional residual capacity (FRC)
  • Residual volume
  • Total lung capacity
  • Forced vital capacity (FVC)
  • Forced expiratory volume (FEV)
  • Forced expiratory flow (FEF)
  • Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR)
