What is IFS?

What exactly is internal family systems?

Internal family systems (IFS) is a type of psychotherapy that addresses the internal parts of an individual’s personality. IFS assumes that the human psyche is composed of multiple sub-personalities, each with its own beliefs, feelings, and behaviors. These include:

  • Wounded parts: Unresolved stress, trauma, abuse, or neglect that stems from the past.
  • Protective parts: Personality traits such as high achiever, people-pleaser, and type-A perfectionist. Chronic pain, fatigue, or other bodily symptoms are often associated with protective parts.
  • SELF Part: The understanding, empathetic, and confident part of a person.

The goal of IFS therapy is to help individuals understand and manage their internal parts by developing a compassionate relationship with them.

How can IFS help me?

According to IFS theory, the different parts of ourselves develop as a result of past experiences, especially traumatic ones. Some parts take on protective roles to shield us from pain, while others hold painful emotions and memories that are too difficult to bear.

Our Therapy Solutions counselors can help you identify and work with different parts of yourself to better understand the dynamics between them.
