Pre-Surgical PT

Wally O.

I started pre-surgery physical therapy with Brian at Therapy Solutions. We reached a point where he felt I was ready for surgery. Being properly prepared removed much of the anxiety associated with this type of surgery. The doctor following surgery and the post-surgical therapists said I was the best-prepared patient they ever had. My pain level was manageable between 4 and 5. I was released the following day from the hospital and could walk unassisted in 3 days following surgery.

Janel F.

I received a PRP injection and started PT, hopeful to just be able to move my arm behind my back or out to the side without having surgery. At the time I could not put on a coat, lift my arms in front of me, reach out to grab coffee at a drive up window, rake my yard, or even open a jar without pain due to a worn out rotator cuff. 8 weeks later, I can do all of those things with only minor irritation. I am grateful for Tom’s help and hope to have put off surgery for a while.

Bonita A.

I thought I was facing another back surgery as the symptoms I had were comparable to the previous 2 surgeries. My therapist was able to help me using ultrasound and exercises. Before beginning treatment, I was unable to sleep due to pain in my right hip going down to my ankle. I could only walk a short distance—less than a block—could not climb stairs without pulling myself up, nor could I ride in a vehicle without increased pain. I am now pain-free, can walk without any trouble, climb stairs, and ride in a vehicle.

Natalie H.

I came in with tingling in upper right arm. I was afraid I would need neck surgery as what happened with left arm/neck. Tom was so great. He started me out on a few simple movements and the tingling and pain would stop. I was determined that it was coming from poor posture when sitting. He worked on a few trigger points and the tingling and pain quit. We increased exercises and different kinds of stretching. Now my tingling and pain are gone. If it does tingle, I know just what to do to make it stop.

Help Your Surgery Go Smoothly With Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation

If you have a surgical operation on the calendar for the near future, know that it is perfectly normal to be worried about the outcome, or how long you’ll be in recovery for. Physical therapy is often recommended by doctors to help patients after surgery as part of their recovery plan, but did you know that there are several benefits to having pre-surgical rehabilitation treatment?

If you’re interested in learning more about “pre-hab,” as we like to call it, contact Therapy Solutions in Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND today!

Pre-surgical Rehabilitation Defined

Pre-surgical rehabilitation, also referred to as “ pre-hab”, is becoming an increasingly recommended practice by surgeons, as it can improve the outcomes for their patients. Studies have shown that beginning physical and occupational therapy a month or so before surgery can significantly speed up your recovery time.

It is no secret that the preparation for surgery can leave you feeling worried, scared, or anxious, but a pre-hab program may be able to put your mind at ease. A pre-surgical rehabilitation plan will help you become more physically and mentally prepared for your upcoming procedure.

6 Key Benefits of Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation

Here are six ways that pre-surgical rehabilitation can help your surgery and recovery period be more successful:

1. Less pain

A Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND physical or occupational therapist can help reduce your pain through pre-hab, no matter what your surgery is for. He or she will use a variety of methods, including exercise, massage therapy, or ice and heat therapies.

2. Less chance of complications

Physical and occupational therapy treatments, especially those incorporating exercise programs, can improve your strength and endurance. As a result, this can increase your immunity levels so that there is a lower chance of you developing an infection after surgery.

3. Less recovery time

If you choose to complete a pre-hab program before your surgery, your recovery will lessen, and it should go much smoother than it would without physical and occupational therapy treatments. You will be able to get back into the regular swing of things with your routine much quicker if you have toned, strong muscles going into surgery!

4. Increases stamina

No matter what kind of operation you have, you will always experience a loss of strength after it’s completed. However, going through a pre-habilitation program can help reduce the amount of strength that is lost by increasing your stamina before the operation. Engaging in a physical routine before surgery will improve your overall stamina and make the surgery much easier.

5. You might be able to avoid surgery altogether

It may be possible to avoid surgery if your pre-hab treatments with Therapy Solutions work well in improving your pain and overall condition. This is not always a common case, but some patients found that their pre-hab treatments helped them so much with reducing their pain that they canceled their operation. If your condition begins to improve considerably after starting physical and occupational therapy, make sure to consult with your physician regarding future treatment options and the possibility of avoiding surgery.

6. Better overall outcomes

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) states that pre-hab can improve the overall outcomes of surgery, and can even help in saving money if everything goes smoothly. The stronger you are before the surgery, the more likely the surgery will be successful.

Is Pre-surgical Rehab Right For Me?

Pre-hab helps improve strength and promote pain relief before surgery, as it prepares your body for the procedure. It can also help you prepare mentally, by encouraging an overall sense of well-being. Surgery can take a traumatic toll on your body; therefore, it is typically only performed when there are no other options available. According to the National Institutes of Health,, participating in exercise therapies prior to surgery can exceptionally improve your post-operative outcomes and reduce your recovery time. Our Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND therapists at Therapy Solutions know just how to ease your mind about your upcoming operation, get you started with the right treatment plan to prepare for it, and assist you in improving your physical health and wellness.

Contact Therapy Solutions in Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND Today

Most patients who undergo operations are referred to a physical and occupational therapy office for recovery, and end up having to become accustomed to an exercise routine. Deciding to begin a pre-hab program means you’ll be able to get used to that routine before your surgery, so it’s not as much of a shock to your system to get used to afterwards.

Pre-surgical rehabilitation provides a number of positive benefits for surgical patients. When you are as strong, flexible, and healthy as possible, you are able to regain normal function much quicker after surgery.
