Shoulder Pain

Faye S.

I came to Therapy Solutions a mess—had very severe pain in my arm and shoulder. I love to bake and this pain was causing a lot of problems. I was seen by Tom, each session it got better and as I continue to come and do the exercises he gave me and I was able to continue what I love to do – ‘Bake’

Lola H.

I had no prior experience with physical therapy and frankly, had low expectations. I was shocked to find my mobility improved after the very first appointment. Even though the treatments were at times painful, Kara was very friendly and easy to work with. I came back twice a week and then once a week and in less than two months am now able to use my arm in every way I should.

Bonnie V.

I came to Therapy Solutions two weeks after a complete shoulder replacement. At that time, I could not move my arm above my heart. Working with Adrienne was an easy task. I felt that she was truly concerned about my health. As of now, I can move my shoulder above my head without any pain. My doctor was amazed at the mobility.

Frances J.

I had intense pain in my shoulder whenever I reached up high, to the side, or behind. With just a few short weeks of PT and at-home exercise, I am now able to move freely and without pain.

Janel F.

I received a PRP injection and started PT, hopeful to just be able to move my arm behind my back or out to the side without having surgery. At the time I could not put on a coat, lift my arms in front of me, reach out to grab coffee at a drive up window, rake my yard, or even open a jar without pain due to a worn out rotator cuff. 8 weeks later, I can do all of those things with only minor irritation. I am grateful for Tom’s help and hope to have put off surgery for a while.

Gary L.

Since having both shoulders replaced, I have enjoyed a much better quality of life!! What once caused pain is now nearly pain-free. Motions I could not do without pain have greatly improved and with little to no pain. I credit my recovery to the care and advice I was given by Tom. I knew I could ask a question and that he would answer it honestly and in terms I could understand. His explanations always put my mind at ease as I worked on my recovery to regain strength and surpass my pre-surgery range of motion. Thank you, Tom!!!

Natalie H.

I came in with tingling in upper right arm. I was afraid I would need neck surgery as what happened with left arm/neck. Tom was so great. He started me out on a few simple movements and the tingling and pain would stop. I was determined that it was coming from poor posture when sitting. He worked on a few trigger points and the tingling and pain quit. We increased exercises and different kinds of stretching. Now my tingling and pain are gone. If it does tingle, I know just what to do to make it stop.

Arlie A.

I was having severe pain in my right shoulder and also some pain in my left shoulder and both elbows for several months. Went to see an orthopedic surgeon. The x-rays they took showed a possible rotator cuff tear & thinning with some shoulder arthritis starting. Was referred to Therapy Solutions for rehab and shoulder exercises… I am pleased with the progress I have made. The treatment techniques have given me the ability to move my shoulder, lift my arm, & reduced the pain and I am sleeping much better. I am working toward a full recovery. I thank Tom and Therapy Solutions for that.

James C.

The worst problem after I first hurt my shoulder was trying to sleep. It was almost impossible to rest. To lay anywhere on my right side hurt and if I tried to lay on my left, then there was no position where I could hold my right side up that it wouldn’t hurt too. I can now lay on my right side. My shoulder still hurts when I work but not as bad as before.

Loretta R.

[It was] difficult bringing my arm up to brush my hair—now, no problem. Could not raise the arm to brush my teeth—now, no problem. Could not sleep for more than a couple hours—now, I can sleep up to 6 hours at a time. Could not lift the coffee pot with the right arm—now, no problem. Now can carry it to the table and pour coffee. Could not use my right arm to close the vehicle door—now, I can close the door using the right arm.

Phil G.

Had pain in the right shoulder. Could not sleep on either side, causing pain in the shoulder. Therapy has improved my sleep. No pain when laying on either side. I have an increased range of movement in the shoulder.

Kristal F.

I had rotator cuff surgery in February 2017. Tom was my physical therapist who helped get back on the road to recovery over the next several months. Therapy Solutions wants to make sure a person gets back on his/her feet and get back to enjoying life. Thanks again, Tom! - Kristal F.

Shoulder Pain Relief Is Closer Than You Think

Occupational Therapy Can Provide Long-Lasting Pain Relief

At least once in our lives, most of us will deal with shoulder pain. Shoulder pain can show up at the most inopportune times, such as when you’re reaching toward the top shelf in the store to grab an item, or when you’re struggling to find a comfortable position to sleep in without feeling a dull aching pain in your shoulder and neck.

It can also manifest itself as a result of an injury, leaving you feeling as if your shoulder is useless or immobile. There are several reasons why someone may experience shoulder pain; the severity of which can range from the temporary discomfort of a pulled muscle to the agonizing bone-on-bone friction of arthritis.

Whatever the case may be with your shoulder pain condition, know that Therapy Solutions in Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND is dedicated to providing you with natural pain management modalities. Contact us to make an appointment with us today!

Where Did Your Shoulder Pain Come From?

The shoulder joint is complex, to say in the least! This presents many opportunities for pain-causing conditions. Some of the most common causes of shoulder pain include:

Impingement

Impingement can happen as a result of abnormal movement and tracking of the humeral head as you lift your arm up. Pain typically occurs when lifting your arm at or above 90 degrees.

Arthritis

Arthritis is very common unfortunately, and can affect anyone at any age. The two main forms of arthritis that affect the shoulder are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system decides to attack the membranes surrounding the shoulder joint, resulting in pain and inflammation. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in the shoulder joint experiences significant “wear and tear,” typically due to age or excessive overuse. Both of these conditions can result in a painful loss of mobility, weakness to the shoulder muscles, and difficulty performing normal, daily tasks.

Frozen shoulder

This condition is also known as “adhesive capsulitis,” and is the result of your arm being in a case or sling for a while. It can also occur if you have been bedridden for a long time, unable to get up and move around. Women from the ages of 40 to 60 tend to experience this condition more than men, and some ethnicities are more predisposed to than others as well. Frozen shoulder results in a painful loss of motion in the shoulder with a tightening of the shoulder joint that severely limits motion.

Tendinitis

When the shoulder joint is overused excessively, tendinitis can occur. It’s typically due to the demands of a laborious job, overhead activity, or sport. Furthermore, poor posture can also be a major factor, because it alters the normal forces on the tendons, and causes a tendon injury. Poor posture causes tendons to experience painful inflammation, resulting in swelling and impingement when raising your arm.

Rotator cuff tear

The job of the rotator cuff is to correctly guide the movement of the shoulder joint. The rotator cuff is composed of 4 muscles, tendons, and soft tissue that surround the shoulder joint. If you receive an injury, have poor posture, or overuse your shoulder incorrectly, your rotator cuff can be partially or completely torn. Depending on the severity and situation, you may need surgery, but occupational therapy at Therapy Solutions can drastically help reduce pain, restore strength and range of motion to the rotator cuff to compensate for the partial tear.

How Does Shoulder Pain Happen?

Your shoulder is a very complex part of your body. It is capable of accomplishing many physical tasks, and also has the greatest range of all the joints you have! It is a “ball-and-socket” joint, meaning the head of the upper arm bone, or “humerus,” fits perfectly in the corresponding space within the shoulder blade or “scapula.” The ends of the bone are protected by a thick layer of cartilage, protecting the bones from rubbing together.

Fluid-filled sacs called “bursae” also protect the tendons from rubbing against the bones. Tendons attach the bones in the shoulder to a set of bones, known as the rotator cuff. If something goes wrong with the intricacies that make up the mechanical interplay of the shoulder, pain can be a lasting result unless occupational therapy treatment is sought out.

The type of pain you feel in your shoulder can vary, depending on what is causing it. Pain from impingement, for example, begins at a certain point in the range of motion as you lift your arm up in the air. Pain resulting from a degenerated shoulder may create persistent aches every time you move your arm in certain directions. Acute injuries can result in sudden and intense pains that make it next to impossible to even move your shoulder. Thankfully, our skilled and attentive occupational therapists at Therapy Solutions in Dickinson, Killdeer, and Richardton, ND know exactly how to treat this kind of pain and will have you back into your normal routine in no time.
