Unlocking Potential: The Benefits of Occupational Therapy Interventions for Children

Benefit of Occupational Therapy

Has a pediatrician or other healthcare professional suggested your child would benefit from occupational therapy? The benefits of occupational therapy are numerous, but you might still wonder what your child can expect when they go in for the sessions.

Never fear! The occupational therapists at Therapy Solutions are happy to provide an overview of the different interventions we utilize when working with kids.

Generally speaking, occupational therapy is a field dedicated to helping people perform day-to-day activities, ensuring they can be as independent as possible. We focus on the little tasks that many people take for granted: self-care, grooming, and play, to name a few.

Understanding the Role of an Occupational Therapist

The “occupational” in occupational therapy doesn’t just refer to work. Instead, it refers to the activities that keep us “occupied” in day-to-day life. For children, this might include activities like…

  • Getting dressed
  • Brushing their teeth
  • Playing
  • Eating
  • Participating in school
  • And much more!

To help kids complete these necessary activities, our occupational therapists train them in any underlying skills they might struggle with. This includes skills like…

  • Fine motor skills (hand, wrist, and finger movements)
  • Gross motor skills (whole-body movements)
  • Oral motor skills
  • Social and emotional skills
  • Executive functioning skills

Because we help children with a wide variety of skills, we work to ensure that our treatment programs are tailored to your child’s specific needs. We’ll work closely with other members of their healthcare team and conduct a comprehensive assessment to help us determine which interventions will work best.

Examples of How Occupational Therapy Can Benefit Children

The best way to illustrate the benefits of occupational therapy is to provide specific examples (we’ve changed each child’s name):

  • Ethan’s cerebral palsy made it difficult for him to perform several daily tasks. He struggled to dress himself and use utensils. Our occupational therapist had him perform movements that would improve his fine motor skills and bilateral coordination, such as squirting a water gun and playing with Legos.
  • Sophia had Down syndrome, which meant she needed a little help with motor development and sensory regulation, among other needs. She began working with an occupational therapist when she was an infant, who helped with feeding. As she got older, she continued OT, where she learned the skills necessary to play, care for herself, and excel at school.
  • Caden struggled with sensory processing due to having autism. His occupational therapist showed him strategies to help him feel regulated throughout the day. For example, if he felt overstimulated, he could go for a walk; if he felt understimulated, he could listen to music. She also helped him improve his handwriting, another area he struggled with.

As you can see, occupational therapy with Therapy Solutions can help children with various needs. To see how we can help your child, request an appointment for an initial consultation today!
