Physical Therapy’s Role in Women’s Health

Did you know that many common concerns related to women’s health–from sexual dysfunction to painful periods–often stem from dysfunction in the pelvic floor? This sling of muscles supports your pelvic organs, and when it becomes weakened or overly restricted, you can develop a range of difficult-to-discuss symptoms and conditions.

But because the pelvic floor is a group of muscles, physical therapy at Therapy Solutions is an excellent choice for addressing many of these complaints. In fact, our newest physical therapist, Alli Hertz, specializes in women’s health!

To welcome Alli to the team, we want to explore the connection between physical therapy and women’s health. Want a bit more personalized guidance? Schedule an appointment with us today.

Five Common Women’s Health Concerns PT Can Address

Urinary Incontinence

  • Although anyone can develop urinary incontinence, it’s more common among women, especially stress incontinence (leaking when laughing or coughing). It often results from impairments in the pelvic floor related to childbirth or aging.

Pelvic Pain

  • Pelvic pain can have a variety of causes, from nerve issues to gynecological conditions like endometriosis. We’ll help determine the cause and find the right treatment option for your needs.

Sexual Dysfunction

  • Sexual dysfunction in women can include pain during intercourse or difficulty with orgasm. While these issues are often a multi-faceted blend of physical and psychological concerns, pelvic floor dysfunction can absolutely play a role.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

  • This occurs when the pelvic organs slip out of place and bulge in the vagina. It can cause several symptoms, including pain and discomfort, urinary incontinence, or sexual dysfunction.

Pregnancy/Postpartum Discomfort

  • The changes that occur in your body during pregnancy can lead to pelvic and lower back pain, sciatica, and other musculoskeletal concerns.

Women’s Health Treatment Options at Therapy Solutions

We understand that every woman is different, especially when addressing their health concerns. We offer a discreet, non judgemental space where you can freely share your symptoms and concerns–allowing us to create the best treatment program for your needs.

We’ll develop your program from several different treatment options, including the following:

Pelvic Floor Exercises

  • We’ll show you tailored exercises designed to stretch and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles–and ensure you’re performing them correctly.

Manual Therapy

  • Certain hands-on pain relieving techniques, such as myofascial release, can help ease muscle tension that can contribute to pelvic pain and dysfunction.

Electrical Stimulation

  • Electrical stimulation (sometimes called TENs) uses a mild electric pulse to improve pelvic muscle function and reduce pain. It can be beneficial for women struggling with painful periods.

Bladder Training

  • If you have urinary incontinence, bladder training helps minimize restroom breaks. We can also suggest dietary changes that can help alleviate symptoms.

Lifestyle Modifications

  • We’ll help you find lasting relief by addressing other factors that might contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction, such as regular exercise, nutrition, and more.

A Compassionate, Comprehensive Approach to Women’s Health

Many women will struggle with pelvic pain and dysfunction for years, not knowing there are options available to help them address their concerns. Because conditions like incontinence or period pain are so common, many women mistakenly believe they’re a fact of life–but that simply doesn’t have to be the case.

At Therapy Solutions, we want to help you live your best life possible. At our clinic, you’ll find private rooms and a judgment-free zone where you can share your symptoms and get the treatment you need.

Feeling isn’t Failing!

By: Brya Hana

Discouraged, because you are feeling emotions you don’t want to feel? Our emotions are natural components of the human psyche; they form the passageway and ensure the connections between the life of the senses and the life of the mind. They in themselves are neither good or evil.

With this in mind, we can take comfort knowing that whether we experience distressing emotions or pleasant ones, old ones or new ones, our feelings do not determine our healing and growth. What determines our healing and growth is how we respond to emotions and the good we extract from them. For example, we might experience a breakthrough and be ignited by new insights and understanding, and then suddenly something happens and we’re back to feeling sad and confused. This isn’t failure; it’s being human. It’s part of the journey. There could be a sad part of us that needs more tending, or the confusion could be an invitation to trust God and deepen our capacity to tolerate distress.

We might be working on regulating our emotions and then suddenly feel an erosion of anger within us. This isn’t failure; it’s being human and part of the journey. Anger could signal that we’re experiencing injustice and harm and be an opportunity to exercise patience and self-control.

We might be making great progress in our relationships and then start to feel lonely and disconnected. This isn’t failure. This is being human. This is part of the journey. This could be a revelation of a negative dynamic that must be explored and disrupted or an invitation to become more vulnerable in relationships through sharing.

There is no failure for feeling and being human. There are only opportunities for further healing and growth. More lessons to be learned, emotions to be explored and regulated, faith to be strengthened and virtues to be embodied through continuous practice.  All our emotions including distressing ones lead us to wholeness -if you let them. So don’t lose hope! You’re not failing for feeling.  To talk to one of our mental health counselors about distressing emotions contact Therapy Solutions to make an appointment and Take Your Life Back!
