May is Mental Health Month

The month of May is a time to celebrate mental health workers and bring awareness to mental health services. This year in the US alone, about 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition, yet nearly 55% of those do not receive treatment due to stigma or lack of access. To reduce that stigma and bring attention to the beauty of therapy and the strength and courage of those who are willing to embrace change and step into the unknown, we need to get the message out there that talking to a therapist can bring hope and healing. Stepping into the unknown can be uncomfortable! Comfortability can give us the false sense of security, so we stay there, but it can never offer us true growth and wholeness. True healing requires stepping into the unknown, embracing change, and allowing ourselves to be transformed.

The mental health workers at Therapy Solutions are well educated and trained in many modalities. They have training ranging from, but not limited to, EMDR, ART therapy, Parts therapy, Cognitive, Faith-Based therapy, and more. But that is not the only reason they are exceptional! The mental health workers at Therapy Solutions care! The clients that enter through our doors at Therapy Solutions, no matter how big or small the issue is or how difficult or hurt they say they are, or how hopeless they say they are because of one false belief or another (I am not good enough, I am of no value, I don’t matter, I should have known better) are seen by our therapists as a worthy and valuable person and with a belief, in the hope, that they can be transformed!

Every challenge you’ve faced has shaped you into who you are today. By embracing and sharing your experiences, you empower others to do the same. Together, we create a movement of courage, healing, and connection. We want to hear your story and journey with you as you navigate your mental health path to Take Your Life Back. Contact us at Therapy Solutions to talk to one of our mental health counselors.

Congratulations!

Join Us In Celebrating National Speech Language Hearing Month

Did you know that May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month? ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) set aside this month as a time to celebrate and raise awareness about the importance of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in helping people find their voice.

Many people don’t realize that speech-language pathologists help with more than just childhood speech disorders. In fact, at Therapy Solutions, our SLP specifically focuses on helping adults deal with challenges related to speech, language, voice, and swallowing.

This month, we wanted to share more about our speech therapy programs–including our services and who we can help!

What We Treat: Conditions That Impact Communication

Our experienced SLP has in-depth knowledge of language, communication, and the way the mouth, tongue, and throat function. For that reason, they can address a wide range of communication and swallowing difficulties that affect adults, such as the following:

Speech Sound Disorders

Trouble saying sounds correctly or clearly, usually due to neurological or motor issues

Aphasia

Language loss after a stroke or brain injury that can affect your ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend language in general

Dysphagia

Difficulty swallowing, often after surgery, illness, or neurological conditions

Voice Disorders

Disorders that affect your vocal quality, such as chronic hoarseness, pitch changes, or vocal strain

Fluency Disorders

Disorders that affect the flow of speech, such as stuttering

Cognitive-Communication Disorders

Problems with memory, attention, or problem-solving due to conditions like dementia or brain injury

Helping You Find Your Voice: How Speech Therapy Works

We understand that everyone’s needs are different, so the first step in any of our speech therapy services involves a comprehensive assessment, which helps us create a therapy plan that addresses your unique goals and concerns.

One thing that often surprises people about speech therapy is how practical, active, and engaging the sessions are! We design our programs to match each patient’s ability level, interests, and goals, blending different techniques and approaches to ensure a truly customized experience.

Three Examples of Speech Therapy At Therapy Solutions

A Parkinson’s patient works to improve the volume and quality of their speech so they can maintain their communication skills as long as possible

A stroke survivor with aphasia role-plays ordering food or holding conversations with loved ones.

Someone with swallowing problems discovers soft foods they enjoy and works on safe swallowing strategies.

What Specific Techniques Might We Use?

Articulation Therapy

Practicing specific sounds and using visual and tactile cues to shape correct pronunciation

Language Intervention Activities

Restoring vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension through structured tasks and conversation

Voice Therapy

Learning vocal exercises and breath control to improve pitch, volume, and tone

Swallowing Exercises

Strengthening muscles used in chewing and swallowing, including compensatory techniques for safety

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Using tablets or speech-generating devices when verbal communication is limited

Cognitive-Linguistic Therapy

Addressing memory, attention, and reasoning skills affected by stroke or injury
